Spotlight Coffee: Argelia, Empowering Women in Coffee

A Story of Resilience, Community, and Change

Next post Previous post

Our current spotlight coffee, Argelia, comes from a place where coffee is more than a crop; it’s a pathway forward.

Nestled in the remote mountains of Argelia, Cauca, Colombia, this coffee represents years of collective effort, resilience, and hope. Behind every cup is a community of farmers working together to build a more stable, sustainable future for themselves and their families.

The Story Behind ARGCAFEE

In 2014, a small group of 17 coffee farmers in Argelia came together with a shared goal: to access better markets and earn fairer prices for the high-quality coffee they were already producing. That collaboration became ARGCAFEE — Asociación de Transformadores y Comercializadores de Cafés Especiales de Argelia Cauca.
Today, ARGCAFEE has grown into a powerful association of over 230 members, with 150 active coffee producers. What started as a modest effort has become a thriving, farmer-led organization committed to improving quality of life, protecting the environment, and strengthening social well-being in the region.
Their success is rooted in collective action. By working together, ARGCAFEE members are able to share resources, improve quality standards, and gain access to specialty coffee markets that reward their work appropriately.

Empowering Women in Coffee

ARGCAFEE is also deeply invested in supporting women producers through its Women Coffee Producer Program. Currently, 78 women are active participants, with more joining each year.
The program provides financial incentives for women-produced coffee while actively promoting women’s leadership and visibility within the coffee industry. Many of these women are also involved in the Coca Substitution Program, multiplying the impact on their households and communities.
By recognizing and rewarding women’s contributions, ARGCAFEE is helping create a more equitable coffee economy — one where women’s labor, expertise, and leadership are valued and supported.

Why This Coffee Matters

When we chose Argelia as a spotlight coffee, we were drawn to its flavor profile as well as the story behind it.
This coffee represents:
  • Farmer-led collaboration
  • Sustainable economic alternatives
  • Environmental responsibility
  • Community resilience
  • A commitment to fairness and transparency
Every bag supports producers who are actively choosing a different future — one built on quality, legality, and shared success.

From Argelia to Your Cup

When you brew Argelia, you’re tasting the result of years of perseverance and partnership. It’s coffee grown with intention, care, and courage — and it reminds us why we believe specialty coffee can be a force for good.

We’re honored to share this coffee with you and invite you to take a moment to appreciate the people and programs behind it. It's so encouraging to see the coffee industry becoming a more and more welcoming space for women from farming, to roasting. Each cup is a small, but meaningful connection to a community working toward lasting change.
